Curriculum

Learn Every Day and Letterland form the academic foundation of our education-based preschool program.

At Oakcrest Preparatory Academy, we are an academic, education-based preschool where curriculum choice is central to our program. Learn Every Day was developed from current research on how children learn best. Principles outlined by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) as essential to best practice guided its design. Each of the 36 thematic units is developmentally appropriate.

Learn Every Day is flexible, so teachers can adapt lessons to the needs and academic levels of children in their classroom. It recognizes that teachers are innovative and creative—able to select books, songs, or games that fit a particular group. Every child learns differently, so teachers can plan activities that meet individual needs. Each day includes opportunities for sensory play, music, movement, math, science, social studies, self-help skills, social development, gross-motor development, literacy, art, and more.

The goal is a positive classroom community filled with meaningful learning. Teachers introduce key concepts and related ideas that invite open-ended, child-directed thinking. Through questions and exploration, children are guided toward deeper understanding while actively constructing their own learning.

Learn Every Day is paired with Letterland, our phonics program, for a well-rounded experience. Letterland teaches phonics through a story-based approach that engages children with story logic, music, actions, alliteration, movement, art, songs, sensory play, games, and role-playing. Systematic instruction strengthens decoding and word recognition. Letterland aligns with the Common Core and is widely used in public schools across North and South Carolina. Children ages one and up enjoy Letterland in the classroom—characters are introduced early so that by Pre-Kindergarten, children recognize characters, letters, and sounds, creating a smooth path toward blending sounds and reading.

The award-winning Letterland program was created more than 50 years ago and has proven effective in classrooms in 111 countries around the world.
